I live in the rural woods of Maine and I have been
thinking recently how I can live off the land by raising my own farm animals
such as chickens for eggs, pigs for meat and cows for milk but before I jump in
to that I want to learn all I can so I do not bit off more than I can chew.
That is where the flexibound book Barnyard Kids: A Family Guide for Raising
Animals by Dina Rudick came in handy. It not only told me what size pen I
needed but also how to keep them happy and what to expect every season. Horses, rabbits and chickens oh my! The
animals of our barnyard offer all sorts of rewards which are food, fiber,
companionship and more. They also come with quite a lot of responsibility this
book offers an introduction, optimized for young families of what makes them
tick, sick and what they can give.
My Opinion: I really enjoyed this
book as it is very informative and prepares you on what to expect when owning
barnyard animals like pigs have exquisite and sensitive hearing, when a chicken
is sick they will droop and so much more. I learned to start small and make
sure each animal is happy with how they will be living and keep safe from
predators.
This is a great holiday gift for
someone who has talked about owning barnyard kids or just starting out at
farming.
