The Story of Juneteenth by Dorena Williamson and illustrated by Markia Lenia from Worthy Kids. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the enslaved people of Texas finally learned they were free, With this simple book, little ones will learn about the history of that first Juneteenth, how the celebration spread, and why we celebrate Juneteenth today.
My Opinion: This book is great for kids as t is
simple for them to understand and I am sure they will have lots of questions as
I did one was why were African Americans enslaved to begin with? I remember
being in school not knowing anything about black history as the books we got in
school never taught it. I always thought people were equal and the color of
your skin did not matter it is over the years I have found out different and
today there is still strive with both races which makes you wonder will it ever
be equal? I can only say if they want it to and forget the past as I don’t live
there.
